Tanning oils are used to intensify the effects of UV rays. These oils can work in a number of ways, depending on the brand that is being used. One way that it can be effective in bringing a tan appearance to the skin is to produce extra melanin. Tanning oils that do this usually have melanin as a main ingredient. Tanning oils work by attracting and focusing the ultraviolet rays of the sun onto the skin. Although the skin receives more than enough UV exposure in most sunny climates to create a tan, the properties of tanning oils accelerate the process by intensifying the rays. After long tanning sessions and sun exposures, your skin sure does get the tan you want but also lose its natural structure. The darker the skin, the duller it looks. Moisturizing regularly will help you tan by keeping your skin hydrated and supple. Dry skin will not tan as evenly and will peel after sun exposure. Apply moisturizer on a daily basis and always reapply immediately following a tanning session. Choose a moisturizer made specifically for your skin type -- oily, dry, acne-prone. The best way to apply olive oil on your skin for a tan is to use a small towel or piece of cloth. Soak the cloth generously into the oil and massage it evenly on the exposed parts of your body. Keep in mind that your skin should be dry before application. Be generous while applying the oil, but do not apply so much that it starts to drip.
